Back Cove Trail – Portland, ME

  • Post category:Trails

On June 12th, 2024 Traxton and I went for a walk around Back Cove Trail in Portland, Maine. Back Cove Trail is a 3.6 mile loop around Back Cove. The trail is super easy to walk. Some of the trail is gravel and some of it is paved. The back side of the trail has the best views. From here we could look over the cove toward the city. The trail has an abundance of benches that you can take a break at and take in the scenery on the backside.

We found a park on the backside of the trail called Edward Payson Park that is a great place to take your kiddos. They have a wonderful playground with a story trail. It appeared to me that the playground was either new or had newer equipment. Traxton and I took a break from our walk and enjoyed the swing. There was also a bathroom easily accessible from the trail in the parking lot of the park. This was very helpful to me as there wasn’t anywhere else on the trail to take a leak, or where I could throw Traxton’s diaper away.

One other area of the trail that was neat was when we crossed over the bridge on the highway. To the left was Back Cove and to the right was a nice view of Casco Bay.

We were able to see many boats out in the bay and even a couple in Back Cove. One of the boats actually caught a nice fish as we were walking by.

If you’re up for a nice walk while you are in Portland I recommend checking this trail out. We certainly had a blast and the weather was absolutely perfect!

After our walk we went to Black Cow Burgers and Fries. I decided to get the chicken sandwich since I wasn’t really up for a burger after the long walk. It was right across the street from The Highroller Lobster Company which I hear is fantastic as well. I’m hoping to check it out as well while we are here.
