Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort – Rodanthe, NC

For our trip to the Outer Banks we decided to stay at the Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort in Rodanthe, NC. The Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort is located just 25 minutes south of Nags Head. The drive down Highway 12 to the Resort from Nags Head is absolutely gorgeous! You’ll drive over several beautiful bridges. You’ll pass by the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Drive across the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. You’ll see some magnificent sand dunes along the highway as well which are quite awesome. Once you make it to Rodanthe the Resort is only about 5 minutes into the island. It will be on your left easily marked by the KOA sign.

We chose to stay in a 1 room Camping Cabin which has the main full size bed to your left and bunk beds on your right. Our Cabin had an air conditioner. Which we only used during the day while we weren’t there. A ceiling fan, which we used only at night once. The first night we actually kept the windows open and didn’t need to use the AC or the fan. There was also a little bench that we used for a night stand, and a bar area. Which we used for storing our snack bags and accessories.

On the porch there was a nice couples swing, which we sure enjoyed our time in. There was also a chair on the other side of the porch. Out in front of the cabin we had a very nice, deep fire pit that we utilized two of the three nights. There was a nice little charcoal grill that is next to the cabin which you will more than likely utilize while you are staying here. I say that because there isn’t much to choose from in the town of Rodanthe. So make sure that you pack some food with you to cook if you plan on spending a lot of your time at the resort.

We enjoy our stays in Camping Cabins, the only down size is there is no restroom inside so you’ll need to bring a bucket to use at night. Although, Cassie would not use it so she had to walk to the bath house at night; which was not a short walk. We don’t necessarily mind that though because that means that our cabin was in a quiet area away from all of the foot traffic.

The Resort itself was very well kept. The managers and employee’s at this Camping Resort really care about their Campground. The bathhouses were extremely clean, which you don’t always see at campgrounds. They were even doing some renovations to the playground area to make it safer and more fun for the kids. The pool was flat out huge! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to enjoy the pool during our stay due to the cooler temperatures and high winds. The pool area sure looked fun though. There was an arcade room that had a few games in it, including a Nascar game which I always enjoy. There was also a basketball goal near the pool that we enjoyed some time at. They had another playground area, a large dog walk area, and even a huge trampoline type thing. The trampoline seemed like it was the main attraction for the kids.

As mentioned before the bathhouse’s were super clean, but also quite large with many stalls. There was a separate room in the bath house area where the showers were located. Which means they weren’t in the same room as the restrooms, which was awesome. They also had doors that you can lock in the shower room so it was very private. Usually in campgrounds there is just a shower curtain that blocks the entrance to the shower so there isn’t much privacy. So that was a nice surprise to have privacy in the showers. Outside of both bathhouses there were outdoor showers for washing the sand off from your time at the beach.

Most people’s favorite part of the resort is that the resort is ocean front. The beach at the resort is beautiful. It is very clean and has that beautiful golden North Carolina sand that you sink your feet into. The resort also owns the land across the road from the resort. You can walk out to the Pamlico Sound from there and watch all of the wind and kite surfers. We took some time to enjoy that as each day was perfect for that while we were there.

Overall, we greatly enjoyed our stay at the Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort and highly recommend it for your trip to the Outer Banks!

Should you make a trip to Nags Head for lunch or dinner check out Sam & Omie’s!

I recommend taking a mattress topper like this one for the KOA beds. They aren’t very comfy :).
