Keyhole Sink Trail was a delightful hike located about 20 minutes west of Flagstaff just off I-40. The hike wasn’t too long, only 1.6 miles out and back. The only downfall is it is a bit of a drive from pretty much anywhere.
The parking area for the trail is on the south side of the road, (which is the iconic Route 66) where there is a snow play area. On the north side is this wonderful trail that leads to a treasure. The ending area looks like an ancient massive sinkhole. There is a waterhole by the rocks with living creatures such as crawdads(crayfish). It is quite beautiful and if you pay attention you will see the petroglyphs on one of the rocks on the left side. Look, but don’t disturb them so others can enjoy seeing them also.
If you’re in the area, stop and take the trek on the Keyhole Sink Trail. You will be glad you did.
This is a popular trail for birding, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and hiking. Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed in certain areas.
